“I’m Not Ready Yet”

You’ve been here before.

There’s something you want to do. Start the business. Apply for the job. Sign up for the class. And right on cue, a thought shows up that sounds completely reasonable:

I’m not ready yet.

Maybe it comes dressed as humility — I still have a lot to learn. Maybe it sounds like wisdom — I just need a little more experience first. Either way, it feels less like fear and more like good judgment.

That’s what makes it so effective.

What you’re hearing isn’t a flaw in your thinking. It’s your Safety System doing exactly what it was built to do — protect you from the discomfort of uncertainty. And it’s very good at its job. Instead of showing up as fear, it shows up as a perfectly reasonable sales pitch.

The tricky part? There’s always more to learn. Always another credential, another book, another reason to wait.

Here’s the thing — readiness rarely arrives before action. Most of the time, it shows up because of action.

You don’t have to be ready. You just have to be willing to start.

Why the Pitch Always Works

In the last post, we talked about one of the Safety System’s favorite lines — I’m not ready yet.

But here’s the question worth asking: why does it work so well?

Think about the people who know you best. Your spouse. Your siblings. Your closest friends. They know your history, your habits, your soft spots. But even they don’t know you as well as your subconscious does.

Your subconscious has been with you every single day of your life. It knows what you’re afraid of, what you care about, what you’ll believe, and — maybe most importantly — what you won’t push back on. It has watched you longer and more closely than anyone else ever has or ever will.

So when it needs to keep you from doing something that feels unsafe, it doesn’t guess. It knows exactly which story will land.

For you, it might be timing. For someone else, it’s not being ready. For another, it’s feeling worthy. Same goal — keep you in familiar territory — completely personal delivery.

That’s not a flaw in the system. That’s the system working exactly as designed.

And that’s why the pitch is so good.
